The gases that come out of volcanoes are water vapor followed by carbon dioxide(CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
What happened in this village that was located next to the dormant volcano was a lack of oxygen. Because SO2 is more dense than CO2, the SO2 settled in the valley, and the villagers were breathing in the poisonous gas instead of air.
