Water 1-11-11

What elements make up water?
- Hydrogen and oxygen.

Is water an ionic compound or a covalent compound?
- Covalent

What is the shape of water?
-
A H2O molecule consists of a single atom of oxygen with two hydrogen atoms bonded to it, forming an angle of 104o 31' (104 degrees 31 minutes) with its vertex at the center of the oxygen atom and its rays passing through the centers of the hydrogen atoms. To visualize the relationship of the two hydrogen and one oxygen atoms, imagine a Mickey Mouse cartoon head, with the oxygen atom, which is the larger atom, being the head and the two smaller hydrogen atoms being the ears.

Why does water stick to itself?
- Because hydrogen bonds together, hydrogen is not attracted to water so then it does not dissolve in it.

Why does water not stick to or mix with oil?
-Water is charged positively on the oxygen end, and negatively on the hydrogen end. Oil does not have a charge (it's neutral), so the oil does not mix with the water.
